Moraine Lake Shuttle Guide — Everything You Need to Know

Few lakes on Earth stop people in their tracks quite like Moraine Lake. That improbable blue — a shade somewhere between turquoise and glacier-milk — backed by the jagged wall of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, is one of the most photographed scenes in Canada. But getting there has changed dramatically in recent years. Private vehicles are no longer permitted on Moraine Lake Road during peak season, which means the shuttle is no longer optional — it’s the only way in (unless you’re willing to hike or cycle). Here is everything you need to know to visit without a headache.

Why the Shuttle Exists

Moraine Lake Road is a single-lane dead-end that terminates at a small parking lot designed for a time when far fewer people visited the Rockies. By the late 2010s, the road was gridlocked by 6 a.m. on summer mornings, with cars parked kilometres back along the highway shoulder. Parks Canada closed the road to private vehicles and introduced a mandatory shuttle system, now operated in partnership with Pursuit (formerly Brewster Travel Canada). The result is a calmer, more predictable experience — provided you plan ahead.

The Two Shuttle Options

1. Parks Canada Shuttle (Book-Ahead)

Parks Canada Shuttle (Book-Ahead)

This is the primary and most affordable option. Parks Canada operates a dedicated Moraine Lake shuttle that departs from the Park & Ride lot at the Lake Louise Ski Resort overflow parking area.

  • Operator: Parks Canada / Roam Transit
  • Departure point: Lake Louise Ski Resort Park & Ride
  • Journey time: Approximately 25–30 minutes to Moraine Lake
  • Cost: Around CAD $10–$14 per person (return), subject to annual adjustment
  • Booking: Opens in January at reservation.pc.gc.ca — book as early as possible
  • Operating season: Late May to mid-October (weather dependent)
  • Frequency: Buses run approximately every 15–30 minutes during peak hours

Tickets sell out weeks in advance for July and August. If you arrive without a booking and there are leftover seats, you may be able to purchase on the day — but this is not something to count on during peak season.

2. Pursuit / Brewster Shuttle (Premium)

A more flexible, higher-cost option that departs from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and connects to Moraine Lake. This service is designed for guests staying at Chateau Lake Louise and visitors who missed out on Parks Canada reservations.

  • Operator: Pursuit / Brewster Travel Canada
  • Departure point: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
  • Cost: Approximately CAD $32–$38 per person (return)
  • Booking: Via the Pursuit website or hotel concierge
  • Note: Pricing and availability change annually — always verify before travel

Step-by-Step: How to Book the Parks Canada Shuttle

Getting to the Park & Ride

The Lake Louise Ski Resort Park & Ride lot is located off Lake Louise Drive, just north of the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) interchange.

  • By car: Drive to the ski resort parking area, park for free, and board the shuttle
  • From Banff townsite: Approximately 55 km west on Highway 1, around 45 minutes
  • From Calgary: Approximately 185 km west on Highway 1, around 2 hours

Parking at the Park & Ride is free. Do not attempt to drive Moraine Lake Road directly — it is closed to private vehicles from approximately 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during peak season, and Parks Canada staff enforce this strictly.

Alternative Access: Hiking & Cycling

If shuttles are fully booked, two human-powered alternatives get you there legally — and scenically.

Moraine Lake Road on Foot or Bike

Moraine Lake Road is open to cyclists and hikers even when closed to vehicles. The road is 11 km one way from the Lake Louise overflow parking area, with about 130 m of elevation gain. On foot this takes 2.5–3 hours each way; by bike, 45–60 minutes. It is an unpaved gravel surface for part of the way and passes through active wildlife habitat — bear spray is strongly recommended.

The Lake Louise Connector Trail

A designated trail links Lake Louise to Moraine Lake through the forest, roughly 13 km one way with more significant elevation change. This is a beautiful but demanding half-day commitment and should only be attempted by confident hikers with navigation experience.

What to Expect at the Lake

  • Arrival: Shuttles drop off at the main Moraine Lake parking lot, a short walk from the lakeshore
  • The Rockpile: A 5-minute scramble up the boulder pile on the right as you arrive gives you the iconic elevated view — arrive early or stay late to photograph without crowds in frame
  • Canoe rentals: Available at the Moraine Lake Lodge boathouse; first-come, first-served
  • The Lakeshore Trail: An easy 1.8 km walk along the northern shore to the far end of the lake, with increasingly dramatic peak views
  • Consolation Lakes Trail: A rewarding 5.8 km return hike through boulder fields to a pair of quieter lakes behind the rock pile
  • Dining: The Moraine Lake Lodge has a café open to day visitors; expect it to be busy

Shuttle Schedule at a Glance

First departure from Park & Ride: approximately 7:30 a.m. Last return from Moraine Lake: approximately 6:30 p.m. Frequency: Every 15–30 minutes at peak times Journey time: 25–30 minutes each direction

(Times are approximate and subject to change each season. Always confirm on the Parks Canada website before your visit.)

FAQ

Can I drive to Moraine Lake myself?

Not during the daytime restriction window (roughly 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., late May to mid-October). After hours, the road opens to private vehicles — but there is no accommodation at the lake, so this is only relevant if you are arriving very early in the morning before restrictions begin.

What if I’m staying at the Moraine Lake Lodge?

Lodge guests receive vehicle access via a special permit. Contact the lodge directly when booking.

Is there a Parks Canada pass required?

Yes — a valid Parks Canada Discovery Pass (or day pass) is required per vehicle in addition to shuttle tickets. Passes can be purchased at the Park & Ride.

Are dogs allowed on the shuttle and at the lake?

Dogs are permitted on the lakeshore trail but check current Parks Canada rules for shuttle eligibility, as policies vary by season.

What should I bring?

Layers (temperatures at 1,885 m can be significantly cooler than in the valley), sun protection, bear spray, water, and a packed lunch — the café gets extremely busy at midday.

WHEN TO VISIT

Early summer (late May–Jun): Snowmelt still present, fewer crowds, cooler temperatures. Ice may linger on the lake into early June. Peak summer (Jul–Aug): The lake is at its most vivid blue. Book shuttles months in advance. Late summer (Sep): Crowds thin noticeably after Labour Day. Some larch trees begin to turn gold in the upper valleys. Autumn (early Oct): The valley larches turn a luminous amber-gold — one of the most spectacular natural events in the Rockies. Shuttles run until mid-October weather permitting.

ESSENTIAL REMINDER: Moraine Lake Road access rules, shuttle operators, and pricing change annually. Always verify current information at parks.canada.ca or pc.gc.ca before your trip. What was accurate last season may not apply this year.
